MAC Week 3 - Leadership Project Hub

MAC Week 3 - Leadership Project Hub

My observed problem was a lack of student engagement in the writing process.  Would the introduction of digital storytelling foster students’ engagement in the writing process?   The literature reviewed reported that digital storytelling lead to increased motivation and a deeper understanding of literary content.  According to the Multimedia Learning Theory, digital stories offered an effective use of multimedia while avoiding overburdening the cognitive load of the working memory.  My results showed an increase in engagement and interest in learning.  In conclusion, implementation of digital storytelling increases engagement in core content.

I plan to share my project and results with the National Council of Teachers of English through their journal, Language Arts.  It is a professional journal for elementary and middle school teachers highlighting current research relating to Language Arts.  I thought it would be a perfect showcase for my work since my goal was to increase engagement in the writing process through digital storytelling.   Luckily the theme for the November issue is “Innovations”.

  1. Cherylee, you’ve done a wonderful job with your digital storytelling research. Your literature review gave you a clear direction, and in the spirit of all great scientific research you’ve tested the theory, gave it your own twist and made it your own. Now you can share what you’ve found with the educational community and I think you’ve made a fantastic choice with how you intend to share it. The NCTE Language Arts journal is the perfect venue to share what you’ve learned and make sure it gets the broad audience it deserves. Good luck with the application process!

  2. Cherylee Gruber - I love that your Action Research focus was on engagement though digital storytelling. Our research was very similar and it makes me very happy to see that the effort to engage and motivate through the use of digital media does not stop after elementary school. I know that we are special cases with specific research in mind, but at least we are doing something to help out our situations. Nothing is worse than trying to teach an unhappy and unmotivated child who isn't interested, engaged, or motivated to do anything academic.

I'm happy that your research guided you in the right direction. It's always a bummer when you have great ideas, but the research shows/proves otherwise. Great work from a great educator! How did you hear about the National Council of Teachers of English through their journal, Language Arts? I know that when I was trying to choose between the different journals, I wanted to make sure that my message would be viewed/accepted by an audience with similar student populations or similar teaching styles/mindsets. I also wanted to deliver my message to an audience that could have the most impact of the similar types of students that I am working with. I want to make a difference. I want my story to be heard.
